Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

The key identifier is usually a stamped number on the underside of the cap or the mounting collar. One gotcha we run into regularly: HeatShield changed their mounting-leg design around 2016. Older caps used a single-bolt leg system that tends to crack at the bracket. Newer ones use a double-bolt leg. If your home in Belmont or Fry’s Spring was built before 2010 and still has the original cap, you may have the older design, which fails earlier. Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

• Water in the firebox after heavy rain. The cap’s hood has rusted through or the spark screen has pulled away from the frame. This is the most common failure we see, especially after Charlottesville’s wet springs.
• A metallic rattling sound in high wind. The mounting legs have loosened or one has snapped. This is a warning sign the entire cap could lift off in the next storm.
• Rust staining on the chimney crown. Water is pooling around the cap base instead of running off. Left alone, it will eventually crack the crown and let water into the flue.
