DuraFlex Chimney Cap & Crown Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Chimney Cap & Crown in Charlottesville: What to Know First

DuraFlex chimney cap and crown work in Charlottesville usually runs between $325 and $1,100 depending on whether we’re replacing a cap, rebuilding a crown, or both. Wendell Pike and our crew at Top Hat Chimney complete most DuraFlex cap and crown jobs in a single visit, often within two to three hours of arriving. We’re an independent DuraFlex service provider, not a manufacturer affiliate, which means we call the shots based on what your flue actually needs, not what a corporate warranty department wants us to push.

Call (540) 503-3890

If you own a DuraFlex liner system and your cap is rusting through or your crown is cracked, this page will tell you what’s actually wrong, what it costs to fix in this area, and why we handle these jobs differently than the national chains. Call (540) 503-3890 and a live person answers, day or night.

How DuraFlex Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

  • DuraFlex 316L liner caps with rusted bases: The liner itself holds up fine, but the cap base gets hammered by Charlottesville’s freeze-thaw cycles. Water pools around the base, freezes, expands, and starts the rust. By the time you see staining on the cap, the base is usually compromised. We replace the cap with a properly sized unit and seal the base so it drains instead of pooling.
  • DuraFlex Pro series caps with damaged mesh: The Pro line has a finer mesh than the base 316L caps. It’s good for keeping out embers and tiny critters, but it cakes with creosote faster. Once it clogs, your draft drops and your fire starts smoking. We either deep-clean the mesh or swap the cap for a new one, depending on how far the buildup has gone.
  • Crowns failing above DuraFlex liner terminations: The crown around the top of the flue takes more abuse than any other part of the chimney. When the crown cracks, water runs down along the outside of the DuraFlex liner and starts working on the clay tile behind it. We see this constantly in older Charlottesville homes near the Downtown Mall, where chimneys are 40 to 80 years old. The fix is a proper crown rebuild with an overhang so water drips away from the flue instead of into it.
  • Multi-flue setups with the wrong cap: A lot of DuraFlex installations in this area are two-flue systems, one for the fireplace and one for the furnace or water heater. If someone put a single-flue cap on a multi-flue termination, you get cross-drafting and exhaust backing up into the house. We fit the right multi-flue cap and check the clearances against local code.
  • Aftermarket caps that void the DuraFlex warranty: We’ve pulled off plenty of universal caps that technically fit but weren’t approved for that specific liner termination. The problem is they don’t seat right, they rattle in the wind, and DuraFlex can use them as a reason to deny a warranty claim down the road. We stick with caps that keep your warranty intact, and when aftermarket makes more sense on an older system, we tell you that plainly before we order anything.

Our DuraFlex Chimney Cap & Crown Process

  1. 1
You call (540) 503-3890. A live person answers, gets your address, and we schedule a time that works for you. You get the price before a single tool comes off the truck.
  2. 2
Wendell or one of his crew shows up and goes up. We inspect the cap, crown, and the top few feet of the DuraFlex liner. We run a camera down if the cap condition suggests water has been getting in.
  3. 3
You see what we see. We show you the camera footage and explain in plain English what needs doing and what can wait. If it does not need doing, Wendell will tell you.
  4. 4
We decide on parts together. OEM DuraFlex cap or a quality aftermarket equivalent that won’t hurt your warranty. We quote it, you approve it, then we start.
  5. 5
The repair or replacement happens right then. Cap installed, crown rebuilt or coated, everything sealed and tested. We check the draft and make sure nothing rattles.
  6. 6
You get the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If anything’s off, one call brings us back at no charge.

What DuraFlex Chimney Cap & Crown Costs in Charlottesville

Here’s what we typically see for DuraFlex work in Charlottesville and surrounding Albemarle County:

  • Cap replacement (single flue, standard DuraFlex 316L): $325-$475
  • Cap replacement (DuraFlex Pro or custom sizing): $450-$650
  • Multi-flue cap, sized and installed: $550-$850
  • Crown repair (crack filling and sealing): $275-$425
  • Crown rebuild (full teardown and recast with overhang): $650-$1,100
  • Combined cap + crown job: $800-$1,400, depending on access and crown condition

What moves the price: roof pitch and access, whether we need a boom lift or can work from the roof, the flue count, and how far gone the crown is. You’ll get a firm number before work starts. Call (540) 503-3890 for a free estimate, and remember we waive the trip charge inside our service county.

Why Charlottesville Homeowners Call Top Hat Chimney for DuraFlex Work

We’ve been running brushes and fixing chimney tops in central Virginia since 1999. Wendell Pike grew up in San Diego, learned the trade at Southwestern College in Chula Vista, and has spent the better part of two decades on roofs across Charlottesville, including plenty of older homes tucked in behind the Downtown Mall. He can usually tell you what’s wrong with a flue before the camera even goes in.

On DuraFlex jobs specifically, we know which cap fits which liner termination, what the warranty language actually says, and when an aftermarket part is the smarter money. We also work with HeatShield and Gelco products, so if your DuraFlex system needs a liner repair instead of a cap and crown, we’re already set up for it. Background-checked, uniformed, and we show up when we say we will. If it does not need doing, Wendell will tell you. That’s the whole point of hiring an owner-operator instead of a franchise.
