Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation: The Charlottesville Owner’s Guide

A Copperfield chimney cap installation in Charlottesville typically runs $340 to $680 installed, and we keep the common Copperfield sizes on the truck so the job is usually done in one visit. What usually brings a homeowner to this page is a cap that’s rusted through at the mounting collar, a spark screen that’s pulling loose, or a cap that got knocked askew by a falling limb during one of our Blue Ridge windstorms. We’re an independent chimney company based right here in central Virginia, not affiliated with Copperfield, but we install and service their caps regularly enough to know exactly what fails and what to put in its place.

Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

Most Copperfield caps we see in Charlottesville fall into two lines: the standard single-flue caps with a spark arrestor screen, and the multi-flue or custom-drafted caps for older masonry chimneys that vent more than one appliance. The single-flue models are sized by the outside dimension of your clay tile, so a cap stamped “8×8” fits an 8-inch by 8-inch tile, and that stamp is usually on the underside of the mounting skirt. The multi-flue caps are a different animal entirely: those need to be measured across the top course of brick and drafted to overhang the crown by at least an inch on every side.

One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: Copperfield single-flue caps seat on the outside of the clay tile, not the inside. If you order by the inner flue dimension (which is what a lot of online sizing charts lead people to do), the cap will arrive too small and you’ll be back on the phone with a return. We saw that exact mistake twice last fall in the Fry’s Spring neighborhood. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question, our view is practical: Copperfield’s own caps are well-made, but for most open-flue applications a quality aftermarket stainless steel cap with the same outside-mount design works just as well and sometimes costs less. We’ll tell you which one makes sense for your chimney before we order anything.

Signs Your Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Rust bleeding down the flue tile or onto the crown. This means the cap’s mounting collar has corroded where it grips the tile. Once the collar rusts through, the cap is no longer secured and wind can start working it loose.
  • A cap that wobbles or shifts when you press on it. The mounting legs or skirt have loosened, usually from repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Charlottesville winters don’t stay frozen all season, and that back-and-forth is harder on caps than a solid cold snap.
  • Spark screen pulling away from the cap frame. The screen is spot-welded at the factory, and those welds are the first thing to fail after a decade of rain and creosote exposure. A sagging screen still blocks some embers, but it’s not doing its full job.
  • Water in the firebox after a hard rain. That’s the cap not shedding water properly anymore, often because the mounting is loose and rain is getting between the cap and the tile. Left alone, it starts a slow rot on the crown and the top courses of brick.
  • Animal noise or nesting material in the flue. A Copperfield cap with an intact screen keeps birds and squirrels out. Once the screen is breached, the cap is just decoration, and a raccoon does not care how it looks.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Charlottesville, plan on $340 to $680 for a Copperfield-compatible cap installed, with most single-flue jobs landing around $400 to $480. Multi-flue custom caps run higher because the cap itself is built to order and the installation takes more time on the crown. The range breaks down honestly: the cap itself is $90 to $220 for standard single-flue sizes, mounting hardware and sealant run $20 to $40, and the labor is the balance, including a quick flue inspection while we’re up there.

Every Copperfield cap installation from Top Hat Chimney includes removal of the old cap, inspection of the crown and top course of brick, correct sizing and mounting of the new cap, and clean-up that leaves your yard the way we found it. The work is backed by our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the cap shifts, leaks, or anything about the install is not right, one call brings Wendell Pike and his crew back at no charge. We quote the price before a single tool comes off the truck, and the number on the invoice is the number you heard on the phone.

DIY or Call Us?

I’ll give you the straight answer, same as I would to a neighbor across the counter. This is roof work, and that’s where the line is. A chimney cap sits at the highest point of your roofline in most Charlottesville homes, which means you’re navigating a ladder, a roof pitch, and then reaching over the flue itself, which is not a stable handhold. If you’re comfortable on a roof and your chimney is a simple one-flue reachable from a safe ladder position, you can inspect your cap from below and check for obvious rust or screen damage. But the actual swap belongs to someone who does this every week.

The failures we see from homeowner attempts are not about skill; they’re about height and leverage. A cap that won’t seat square gets forced, the mounting ears bend, and now you own a stripped-out cap that won’t hold even with a new one. We’ll do the job for you and stand behind it. If it does not need doing, I will tell you.
