- The HeatShield Cerfractory crown cracks at the corners. On HeatShield’s original poured crown system, the corners where the crown meets the flue tile are the first to let go. Water pools there after rain, freezes overnight in January, and pries the crown apart. We see it constantly on 1990s and early 2000s homes off Barracks Road and around Fry’s Spring. The fix is usually a full crown recoat with a waterproof crown sealer, laid thick at the corners, not just a patch job.
- The OEM multi-flue caps rust through at the base in 7-10 years. HeatShield’s original galvanized multi-flue caps hold up fine in dry climates, but Charlottesville’s humidity and acid rain eat the base flange. Once that rusts through, water drops straight into the flue and onto the HeatShield liner below.
